Take a minute – or 10 – to think: video

By · Monday, September 12th, 2011

Thinking is underrated, we have found, which is why we are such strong proponents of taking the time to think.

Perhaps the reason thinking doesn’t get the attention it deserves is that the act of thinking can be mistaken for inaction. Not so.

We tell reporters to think for 10 minutes after covering a story. We say: Think with your eyes closed and your notebooks closed.

Ask yourself:

This simple exercise in thinking has turned average stories into good ones and good ones into great ones. And it gives reporters confidence in themselves.

We all need to be reminded to think.

Time is of the essence. We are not advocating a laid-back, feet-on-the-desk approach. But whatever your role and at whatever organization, take those precious few minutes to think.

Can you afford not to?
