No excuses – but our blog is back

Foofie has been on nursing duty as Steve recovers from a second open-heart surgery in a year. The patient is doing great. Foofie will be featured in our videos when they resume by summer’s end. In the meantime, he welcomes you to check out the videos on our YouTube feed on this site and to keep following our blog.

It has been a long time since we have been in touch. Too long.

But after a medically induced hiatus, we are back on schedule with our Think Like an Editor blog. We hope you’re still with us.

As you probably have heard – and might know firsthand – maintaining a blog is a full-time job. It’s a lot of fun, but it is still work.

And as with any job, you have to show up, whether that means being there for your colleagues, your bosses, your customers or your audience. Someone always needs you.

That’s our message in this post:
Be there for people who are counting on you.

Communicate often.

In a few days, we will be welcoming the incoming master’s students at the Newhouse School. In the news writing and reporting course, students majoring in magazine / newspaper / online or arts journalism will build the necessary foundation toward becoming multiplatform and multijob journalists. They will do this every day by communicating with their professors, their peers and their sources as they write stories, capture audio, shoot video and more.

We hope that as they create content on multiple platforms for new audiences this summer, they remember to keep feeding any existing audiences they already have cultivated. Communication can’t take time off, no matter what the reason.

Emilie Davis
