For the month of May, we are devoting this blog to our wishes for journalists present and future: “MAY you … “

Every day, you will find a tip, a tidbit or a top-of-mind piece of advice we hope will help you now and later

Just a day after our wish that you “keep your friends close” — real people, that is — we are encouraging you to widen your circle of friends in a different way.

May you get social.

In a piece published on Social Media Examiner titled “9 Tips for Becoming a Social Media Influencer,” blogger Meaghan Edelstein shares her advice:

  1. Find your focus
  2. Subscribe to platform blogs
  3. Read relevant blogs daily
  4. Set topic and keyword alerts
  5. Populate your blog
  6. Publish on LinkedIn
  7. Share valuable content
  8. Contribute to other sites
  9. Engage online

The neat thing about this advice is that we would not have known about the piece had someone we follow on Twitter not shared it. Mike Johansson, a senior lecturer in the School of Communication at Rochester Institute of Technology, followed tip #7 — and he does it consistently. You can follow him @mikejny and follow Meaghan Edelstein @megse34

Be sure to check out Meaghan Edelstein’s nine tips in full. Even if you aren’t aiming to be a “social media influencer,” you’ll still want to be good at getting social.
